Well, it had to happen some time. I picked these sweet peas from the garden, and the following night we had the first frost. The sweet peas were quite badly hit, and although they’re making a valiant effort, I think this was the last big cutting of the year. I’m glad I decided to take a picture.
This basket filled three vases. This has been a brilliant year for sweet peas – every guest has had a vase of them in their bedroom, I’ve taken posies as gifts when I’ve been to lunch, and I’ve had bunches of them in my kitchen and living room all summer. Even better, the seeds came free with a gardening magazine!
By the way, top left is a chicken foot. I thought about cropping it out, but it amused me so I’ve left it. It belongs to Jocelyn, one of the Rhode Island Reds. (There are other photos with more of her in them – don’t worry, I can’t identify individual chickens from a picture of their toes…)
